ହେଲୋ Odia Wikipedians!

Apologies as this message is not in Odia language, ଦୟାକରି ନିଜ ଭାଷାରେ ଅନୁବାଦ କରିବାରେ ସାହାଯ୍ୟ କରନ୍ତୁ.

The WMF Language team is pleased to let you know that we will like to enable the Section translation tool in Odia Wikipedia. For this, our team will love you to read about the tool and test it so you can:

  • Give us your feedback
  • Ask us questions
  • Tell us how to improve it.

Below is background information about Section translation, why we have chosen your community, and how to test it.

Background information

Content Translation has been a successful tool for editors to create content in their language. More than one million articles have been created across all languages since the tool was released in 2015. The Wikimedia Foundation Language team has improved the translation experience further with the Section Translation. The WMF Language team enabled the early version of the tool in February 2021 in Bengali Wikipedia. Through their feedback, the tool was improved and ready for your community to test and help us with feedback to make it better.

Section Translation extends the capabilities of Content Translation to support mobile devices. On mobile, the tool will:

  • Guide you to translate one section at a time in order to expand existing articles or create new ones.
  • Make it easy to transfer knowledge across languages anytime from your mobile device.

Odia Wikipedia seems an ideal candidate to enjoy this new tool since it has Content Translation tool enabled by default.

We plan to enable the tool on Odia Wikipedia in the coming weeks if there are no objections from your community. After it is enabled, we’ll monitor the content created with the tool and process all the feedback. In any case, feel free to raise any concerns or questions you may already have in any of the following formats:

Try the tool

Before the enablement, you can try the current implementation of the tool in our testing instance. Once it is enabled on Odia Wikipedia, you’ll have access to https://or.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:ContentTranslation with your mobile device. You can select an article to translate, and machine translation will be provided as a starting point for editors to improve.

Provide feedback

Please provide feedback about Section translation in any of the formats you are most comfortable with. We want to hear about your impressions on:

  • The tool
  • What you think about our plans to enable it
  • Your ideas for improving the tool.

Thanks, and we look forward to your feedback and questions.

PS: Sending your feedback or questions in English is particularly appreciated. But, you can still send them in the language of your choice.

On behalf of the WMF Language team.

Soumendrak (ଆଲୋଚନାଅବଦାନ)

@UOzurumba (WMF)

Tested the tool. Few observations:

- Most welcome; as smartphone users have been increasing compared to laptop/desktop users this is a very good attempt on content translation. Kudos.

- Looks good for individual sentence level translation.

- More granular control over the content.

Further can be improved:

- Can we bring in Microsoft Bing translate to the tool? Google translate has many mistakes for Odia language.

- Does the tool actively learns from the suggestions user provide and improve itself? If this can be implemented, would help a lot.

- By moving sentence level, the speed of translation a page reduces. However, this is a trade-off we need to do for sentence level granularity and smartphone support.

Awesome, initiative Waiting for its implementation.

UOzurumba (WMF) (ଆଲୋଚନାଅବଦାନ)

Thank you, Soumendrak, for your feedback; your suggestions about bringing in Microsoft Bing Machine Translation are noted. Regarding the tool learning from suggestions, if you mean the initial machine translation improves based on user translations, then I will say yes, the initial machine translation improves with usage.

We appreciate your taking out time to test the tool and giving us feedback.

Best regards

UOzurumba (WMF) (ଆଲୋଚନାଅବଦାନ)

Section Translation tool enabled in Odia Wikipedia

Hello Friends!

The Language team is pleased to let you know that the Section Translation tool is now enabled in Odia Wikipedia. It means you can translate real content one section at a time using your mobile devices with ease.

Now you can also start translating an article on your mobile device right when you notice it is missing in Odia. From a Wikipedia article in any language, switch languages and search for ଓଡ଼ିଆ. If the article does not exist, an option to translate it will appear, as shown in the image below.

Image of the entry point

Content created with the tool will be marked with the “sectiontranslation” tag for the community to review. We’ll monitor the content created, but we are very interested in hearing about your experience using the tool and reviewing the content created with it.

So, enjoy the tool and provide feedback on improving it.

Thank you!

Hello everyone,

The Universal Code of Conduct Enforcement Guidelines Revisions committee is requesting comments regarding the Revised Enforcement Draft Guidelines for the Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC). This review period will be open from 8 September 2022 until 8 October 2022.

The Committee collaborated to revise these draft guidelines based on input gathered from the community discussion period from May through July, as well as the community vote that concluded in March 2022. The revisions are focused on the following four areas:

  1. To identify the type, purpose, and applicability of the UCoC training;
  2. To simplify the language for more accessible translation and comprehension by non-experts;
  3. To explore the concept of affirmation, including its pros and cons;
  4. To review the balancing of the privacy of the accuser and the accused

The Committee requests comments and suggestions about these revisions by 8 October 2022. From there, the Revisions Committee anticipates further revising the guidelines based on community input.

Find the Revised Guidelines on Meta, and a comparison page in some languages.

Everyone may share comments in a number of places. Facilitators welcome comments in any language on the Revisions Guideline Talk Page. Comments can also be shared on talk pages of translations, at local discussions, or during conversation hours. There are planned live discussions about the UCoC enforcement draft guidelines.

Conversation hours

The facilitation team supporting this review period hopes to reach a large number of communities. If you do not see a conversation happening in your community, please organize a discussion. Facilitators can assist you in setting up the conversations. Discussions will be summarized and presented to the drafting committee every two weeks. The summaries will be published here.
