କଣ୍ଡୋମ (ଇଂରାଜୀ ଭାଷାରେ condom) ଏକ ମୁଣି ଆକାରର ଏକ ପ୍ରତିବନ୍ଧ ଉପକରଣ (barrier device) ଯାହା ଯୌନ ସମ୍ଭୋଗ (sexual intercourse) ସମୟରେ ଗର୍ଭାଧାନ ସମ୍ଭାବନା ଓ ଯୌନସଞ୍ଚାରିତ ସଂକ୍ରମଣ (sexually transmitted infection ବା STIs) ରୋକିବା ନିମନ୍ତେ ବ୍ୟବହାର କରାଯାଏ ।[୧] ଏଥି ନିମନ୍ତେ ଉଭୟ ପୁରୁଷ ଓ ମହିଳା କଣ୍ଡୋମ (female condom) ମିଳେ ।[୫] ସଠିକ ଭାବରେ ପ୍ରତ୍ୟେକ ନାରୀ-ପୁରୁଷ ସମ୍ଭୋଗ ସମୟରେ ପୁରୁଷ ସାଥୀ କଣ୍ଡୋମ ବ୍ୟବହାର କଲେ ମାତ୍ର ୨% ଗର୍ଭାଧାନ ହାର ହୁଏ ।[୧] କିନ୍ତୁ ସାଧାରଣ ବ୍ୟବହାରରେ ଏହି ହାର ପ୍ରାୟ ବାର୍ଷିକ ୧୮% ହୁଏ ।[୬] କଣ୍ଡୋମ ବ୍ୟବହାର କଲେ ଗନରିଆ, କ୍ଲାମିଡିଆ (chlamydia), ଟ୍ରାଇକୋମୋନିଆସିସ୍, ହେପାଟାଇଟିସ ବି ଓ ଏଚଆଇଭି/ଏଡସ ଇତ୍ୟାଦି ରୋଗ ସଙ୍କଟ ଅନେକ ପରିମାଣରେ କମିଯାଏ । କିଛି ପରିମାଣରେ ସୁରକ୍ଷା ମିଳୁଥିବା ଅନ୍ୟ କେତେକ ରୋଗମାନଙ୍କ ନାମ ଜେନିଟାଲ ହର୍ପିସ (genital herpes), ହ୍ୟୁମାନ ପାପିଲୋମା ଭୁତାଣୁ (human papillomavirus ବା HPV) ଓ ସିଫିଲିସ୍ ।[୧]
ସମ୍ଭୋଗ ପୂର୍ବରୁ ଉତ୍ଥିଥ ପୁରୁଷାଙ୍ଗ (erect penis) ଉପରେ ପୁରୁଷ କଣ୍ଡୋମ ଗୁଡ଼େଇ ଦେବାଫଳରେ ମହିଳା ଯୌନାଙ୍ଗରେ ବୀର୍ଯ୍ୟ ପ୍ରବେଶକୁ ଅବରୋଧ କରେ । [୭][୧] ପୁରୁଷ କଣ୍ଡୋମ ଲେଟେକ୍ସରୁ (latex) ଓ ସ୍ୱଳ୍ପ ମାତ୍ରାରେ ପଲିୟୁରିଥେନ (polyurethane) ବା ମେଣ୍ଢାଛୁଆ ଅନ୍ତନଳୀରୁ ତିଆରି ହୁଏ । ପୁରୁଷ କଣ୍ଡୋମ ସହଜରେ ମିଳେ, ବ୍ୟବହାର ବିଧି ସହଜ ଓ ଅଳ୍ପ ପାର୍ଶ୍ୱ ପ୍ରତିକ୍ରିୟା ଦେଖାଏ । ଲେଟେକ୍ସ ଆଲର୍ଜି (latex allergy) ଥିଲେ ପଲିୟୁରିଥେନ ବା ଅନ୍ୟ କୃତ୍ରିମ ସଂସ୍କରଣ ବ୍ୟବହାର କରାଯାଏ ।[୧] ମହିଳା କଣ୍ଡୋମ ପଲିୟୁରିଥେନରୁ ପ୍ରସ୍ତୁତ କରାଯାଇଥାଏ ଓ ଏକାଧିକ ଥର ବ୍ୟବହାର କରାଯାଇପାରେ ।[୭]
ସନ ୧୫୬୪ରୁ ଯୌନ ସଞ୍ଚାରିତ ରୋଗ ପ୍ରତିଷେଧ ନିମନ୍ତେ କଣ୍ଡୋମ ବ୍ୟବହାର କରାଯାଉଛି ।[୧] ରବର କଣ୍ଡୋମ ସନ ୧୮୫୫ରୁ ଓ ଲେଟେକ୍ସ କଣ୍ଡୋମ ସନ ୧୯୨୦ରୁ ବ୍ୟବହୃତ ହେଉଥିଲା । [୨][୩] ଏହାର ନାମ ବିଶ୍ୱ ସ୍ୱାସ୍ଥ୍ୟ ସଂଗଠନର ଅତ୍ୟାବଶ୍ୟକୀୟ ଔଷଧ ଚିଠାରେ (World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines) ଅଛି ଯାହା ମୌଳିକ ସ୍ୱାସ୍ଥ୍ୟ ସିସ୍ଟମ (health system) ନିମନ୍ତେ ଅତି ମହତ୍ତ୍ୱପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ ।[୮] ବିକାଶଶୀଳ ଦେଶମାନଙ୍କରେ (developing world) ଏହାର ଗୋଟିକର କ୍ରୟ ମୂଲ୍ୟ ପ୍ରାୟ ୦.୦୩ରୁ ୦.୦୮ ଆମେରିକୀୟ ଡଲାର ।[୯] ଯୁକ୍ତରାଷ୍ଟ୍ର ଆମେରିକାରେ ଏହାର ମୁଲ୍ୟ ଏକ ଆମେରିକୀୟ ଡଲାରରୁ କମ୍ । [୧୦] ପୃଥିବୀର ୧୦%ରୁ କମ୍ ଲୋକ ଜନ୍ମ ନିରୋଧ ନିମନ୍ତେ କଣ୍ଡୋମ ବ୍ୟବହାର କରୁଛନ୍ତି ।[୧୧] ବିକଶିତ ଦେଶମାନଙ୍କରେ (developed world) ଅଧିକ କଣ୍ଡୋମ ବ୍ୟବହାର ହୁଏ ।[୧୧] ଜନ୍ମ ନିରୋଧ ଉପାୟ ନିମନ୍ତେ କଣ୍ଡୋମ ସଂଯୁକ୍ତ ରାଷ୍ଟ୍ରରେ ୨ୟ ସ୍ଥାନ (୨୨%) ଓ ଯୁକ୍ତରାଷ୍ଟ୍ର ଆମେରିକାରେ ୩ୟ ସ୍ଥାନ (୧୫%) ଅଧିକାର କରିଛି ।[୧୨][୧୩] ବାର୍ଷିକ ପ୍ରାୟ ଛଅରୁ ନଅ ବିଲିଅନ କଣ୍ଡୋମ ପୃଥିବୀରେ ବିକ୍ରୟ ହୁଏ ।[୧୪]
