ଦକ୍ଷ ପ୍ରଜାପତି ଙ୍କର କନ୍ୟା ସତୀ ଶିବହୀନ ଯଜ୍ଞକୁ ଅସହ୍ୟ ମଣି ଯଜ୍ଞକୁଣ୍ଡକୁ ଝାସ ଦେବାପରେ ତାଙ୍କ ଶରୀରକୁ ଶିବ କାନ୍ଧରେ ବହନ କରି କ୍ରୋଧ ଜର୍ଜରିତ ହୋଇ ଭ୍ରମଣ କରିବାରେ ଲାଗିଲେ। ତାଙ୍କ ହସ୍ତରୁ ସତୀଙ୍କର ଶରୀର ଅଂଶମାନ ବିଭିନ୍ନ ସ୍ଥାନମାନଙ୍କରେ ପଡ଼ି ତାହା ଏକ ଏକ ଶକ୍ତିପୀଠରେ ପରିଣତ ହୋଇଛି।

ଶିବ ମହାପୁରାଣ ଅନୁସାରେ ଦେବୀ ସତୀଙ୍କ ପିତା ଦକ୍ଷ ପ୍ରଜାପତି ନିଜ ରାଜଧାନୀରେ ଏକ ମହାଯଜ୍ଞର ଆୟୋଜନ କଲେ ଏବଂ ସମସ୍ତ ଦେବଦେବୀ ଓ ମୁନୀଋଷିମାନଙ୍କୁ ନିମନ୍ତ୍ରଣ କଲେ । ଶିବଙ୍କର ଅସ୍ୱାଭାବିକ ଜୀବନ ଯାତ୍ରା, ଚାଲିଚଳନ ଓ ବେଶଭୁଷାକୁ ସେ ନାପସନ୍ଦ କରୁଥିଲେ । ଏକଦା ଦକ୍ଷ ପ୍ରଜାପତି ଏକ ସମାବେଶରେ ଉପସ୍ଥିତ ହୁଅନ୍ତେ ସବୁ ଦେବତା ଓ ଋଷିମାନେ ତାଙ୍କୁ ସମ୍ମାନ ଦେଖାଇ ଠିଆହୋଇ ପଡ଼ିଲେ, କିନ୍ତୁ ଶିବ ଏକା ଅନ୍ୟମନସ୍କ ହୋଇ ବସିରହିଲେ । ତେଣୁ ଦକ୍ଷ ପ୍ରଜାପତି ଉକ୍ତଯଜ୍ଞରେ ଶିବଙ୍କୁ ଯୋଗଦେବାକୁ ନିମନ୍ତ୍ରଣ କଲେନାହିଁ । ଦେବୀ ସତୀ ଶିବଙ୍କ ବାରଣ ସତ୍ତ୍ୱେ ପିତ୍ରାଳୟକୁ ଗଲେ ଓ ଦକ୍ଷ ପ୍ରଜାପତିଙ୍କୁ ନିଜସ୍ୱାମୀଙ୍କୁ ନିମନ୍ତ୍ରଣ ନକରି ଉଚିତ କରିନାହାନ୍ତି ବୋଲି ଚେତାଇଦେଲେ । କିନ୍ତୁ ଦକ୍ଷ ପ୍ରଜାପତି ମହାଦେବଙ୍କର ଅପମାନ କଲେ । ଏହାକୁ ସହ୍ୟ କରି ନପାରି ସତୀ ମହାଯଜ୍ଞ କୁଣ୍ଡରେ ନିଜକୁ ଆତ୍ମବିସର୍ଜନ ଦେଲେ । ଯଜ୍ଞାଗ୍ନିରେ ପ୍ରାଣାହୁତି ଦେବା ମାତ୍ରେ ସତୀଙ୍କ ଶରୀରରୁ ଆଲୋକମୟ ଜ୍ୱାଳାମୁଖୀ ଉତ୍ପନ ହେଲା । ମହାଦେବ ସତୀଙ୍କୁ ଏତେ ଭଲପାଉଥିଲେ ଯେ, ସେ ଯଜ୍ଞକୁଣ୍ଡରୁ ଦଗ୍ଧ ଶରୀରକୁ ନିଜ କାନ୍ଧରେ ନେଇ ନାନା ଦେଶ ପାଗଳପ୍ରାୟ ଘୁରିବୁଲିଲେ । ଶିବଶଙ୍କରଙ୍କର ଏପରି କ୍ରୋଧାନ୍ୱିତ ଓ ବିବତ୍ସ ଅବସ୍ଥା ଦେଖି ସ୍ୱୟଂବିଷ୍ଣୁ ଧନୁଶରଦ୍ୱାରା ସତୀଙ୍କର ଶରୀରକୁ ଖଣ୍ଡବିଖଣ୍ଡିତ କରିଦେଲେ । ଯେଉଁ ଯେଉଁ ସ୍ଥାନମାନଙ୍କରେ ସତୀଙ୍କର ଦିବ୍ୟ ଅଙ୍ଗ ପ୍ରତ୍ୟଙ୍ଗ ପଡ଼ିଲା, ସେହିସବୁ ସ୍ଥାନଗୁଡ଼ିକରେ ଭିନ୍ନଭିନ୍ନ ଶକ୍ତିପୀଠମାନ ଗଢିଉଠିଲା ଓ ବିଭିନ୍ନନାମରେ, ବିଭିନ୍ନ ରୂପରେ ଦେବୀସତୀ ପୂଜା ପାଇଆସୁଛନ୍ତି । []
