ବ୍ୟାୟାମ ଏକ ଶାରୀରିକ କ୍ରିୟା ଯାହାଦ୍ୱାରା ଦେହ ସୁସ୍ଥ ଓ କାର୍ଯ୍ୟକ୍ଷମ ହୋଇଥାଏ । ମନୁଷ୍ୟ ବିଭିନ୍ନ ଇଚ୍ଛା ପୁରଣ ନିମନ୍ତେ ବ୍ୟାୟାମ କରେ ଯଥା ଓଜନ କମେଇବା ବା ସ୍ଥିର ରଖିବା, ମାଂସପେଶୀ ସୁଦୃଢ଼ କରିବା, କ୍ରୀଡ଼ା କୌଶଳରେ ଶୀର୍ଷକୁ ଯିବା, ନିର୍ଦ୍ଦିଷ୍ଟ ଗଣ୍ଠିମାନଙ୍କୁ ଚଳନକ୍ଷମ ରଖିବା ଓ ଆନନ୍ଦ ପାଇବା ନିମନ୍ତେ କରାଯାଏ । ନିୟମିତ ଓ ବାରମ୍ବାର ବ୍ୟାୟାମ କଲେ ଇମ୍ମ୍ୟୁନ ରୋଗ ପ୍ରତିରେଧକ ଶକ୍ତି ବଢ଼ିଥାଏ ତଥା ହୃତ୍‌ପିଣ୍ଡରକ୍ତନଳି ରୋଗ, ଟାଇପ ୨ ଡାଏବେଟିସମେଦ ବହୁଳତା ଆଦି ରୋଗମାନଙ୍କୁ ପ୍ରତିରୋଧ ହୋଇଥାଏ ।[୧][୨] ବ୍ୟାୟାମଦ୍ୱାରା ମାନସିକ ସ୍ୱାସ୍ଥ୍ୟ ମଧ୍ୟ ଭଲ ରହେ, ବିଷାଦ ଦୂର ହୁଏ, ଯୁକ୍ତାତ୍ମକ ମନୋବଳ ବୃଦ୍ଧି ହୁଏ ଏବଂ ସୁସ୍ଥ ଶରୀରର ଯୌନକ୍ଷମତା ବୃଦ୍ଧି ହୁଏ । ଶିଶୁ ମେଦ ବହୁଳତା ବିଶ୍ୱବ୍ୟାପୀ ଏକ ଚିନ୍ତାର ବିଷୟ [୩]। ଏହାର ବିବିଧ ଉପକାରୀତାକୁ ଦୃଷ୍ଟିରେ ରଖି ସ୍ୱାସ୍ଥ୍ୟ କର୍ମୀମାନେ ବ୍ୟାୟାମର ଉପକାରୀତାକୁ "ଆଶ୍ଚର୍ଯ୍ୟଜନକ" ବା "ଚମତ୍କାର" ଔଷଧ ଭାବେ ଅଭିହିତ କରିଥାନ୍ତି ।[୪]
