ଏହାର କାରଣଗୁଡିକରେ ଗୁରୁତର ରୋଗ, କେମୋଥେରାପି, ରେନ‌ଡ ସିଣ୍ଡ୍ରୋମ, ଆଘାତ, ପୁଷ୍ଟିହୀନତା ଏବଂ ପେମ୍ଫିଗସ ହୋଇପାରେ ।[୫] [୭] କେତେକ କ୍ଷେତ୍ରରେ ଏହାର କାରଣ ଜଣା ପଡିନାହିଁ। [୮] ଅନ୍ତର୍ନିହିତ ପ୍ରଣାଳୀ ନଖ ବୃଦ୍ଧିରେ ବ୍ୟାଘାତ ଯୋଗୁ ଏହା ହୋଇପାରେ । [୨] ପ୍ରତି ୮ ଦିନରେ ନଖଗୁଡ଼ିକ ପ୍ରାୟ ୧ ମିମି ବଢ଼ିବା ସହିତ ରେଖାଗୁଡ଼ିକ ଘୁଞ୍ଚିଥିବା ଘଟଣା ସୂଚାଇଥାଏ । [୯] ସମାନ ନଖ ମଧ୍ୟରେ ଯଦି ଏକାଧିକ ଧାଡି ଉପସ୍ଥିତ ଥାଏ ତେବେ ଏହା ଏକାଧିକ କାରଣକୁ ସୂଚିତ କରେ । [୧୦]
