Keeping in view the exalted pendency of cases as well as the need for free legal aid to the needy litigants, various alternate dispute resolution methods like [[Lok Adalat]], [[Mediation]], free legal aid scheme etc. have been devised since long. However no special statues has been enacted to streamline the process involving free legal services to eligible litigants as well as regarding organization of Lok Adalats for early disposal of cases on mutual settlement. On 11 October 1987, the [[Legal Services Authorities Act 1987]] got accent of the President of India as a step forward in this regard.
