Display Artist: Utagawa Hiroshige Display Title: "Hatsune Riding Grounds, Bakurocho" Translation(s): Bakurocho hatsune no baba Series Title: One Hundred Famous Views of Edo Suite Name: Meisho Edo hyakkei Creation Date: 1857 Medium: Woodblock Height: 13 1/4 in. Width: 8 5/8 in. Display Dimensions: 13 1/4 in. x 8 5/8 in. (33.66 cm x 21.91 cm) Publisher: Sakanaya Eikichi Credit Line: Gift of Mrs. Clark Cavenee Label Copy: "One Hundred Famous Views of EdoOne Hundred Famous Views of Edo is one of the last series Hiroshige made before his death in 1858 after a long-term illness. These 115 prints together present his unique meditation on locations in Edo. Hiroshige distances the viewer from the people he portrays, who go about their daily lives unaware of being observed and inattentive to the fleeting nature of life. The images reveal the warmth and nostalgia of a successful artist at the end of his career for the culture and people of his home city and the locales that they enjoyed and made famous through their appreciation of simple and natural beauty. In downtown Edo, freshly dyed bolts of cloth dry in elegant swathes across the foreground of an open space that had before been a field where the shogun would exercise his horses. A fire watchtower with alarm bell rises high over the residential buildings as a constant reminder of the ever-present threat of fire in the city. The impression of this particular print is crisp and clean, and its condition permits a certain delicacy and grace to prevail throughout the scene. For instance, the graceful branches of the willow trees include tiny specks of green suggesting early spring, a detail that is only seen in early editions of this print such as this." "
