[edit] Short term proposed plan for Oriya Wikipedia

1.Getting the main page in order. It needs rewording of some sentences and an overall improvement. 2.Adding a 'Contents' Page. The main page doesn't link to any contents page as in other wiki portals. So the articles can only be accessed by searching for them (knowing which articles exist in Oriya is impossible) and clicking random article. 3.Categorizing contents page and adding stubs for basic articles. 4.Expanding on the stubs.

I'm trying to do 3 & 4. But for doing 1 & 2 a sysop is needed because the page is locked. If there're any local sysops for Oriya wikipedia, please do let me know on my talk page. I've the improved main page and I've already added the contents page. It should be just unlocked for an hour while I update the page. ଓଡିଆ ୱିକିପିଡିଆ ଏତେ ଦିନ ପରେ ସର୍ବଶେଷରେ ମୋ ବ୍ରାଉଜରରେ ଠିକ ଭାବେ ପ୍ରଦର୍ଶିତ ହୋ‍ଇ ପାରୁଛି. ଏବେ ମୁ ହିନ୍ଦୀ ୱିକିପିଡିଆ ଛାଡି ମୋ ନିଜ ଓଡିଆ ଭାଷାର ୱିକିପିଡିଆ ଉପରେ କାମ କରି ଏହାକୁ ସମୃଦ୍ଧ କରି ପାରିବି. ତେବେ ଏଠାରେ ଆଉ କେହି ଓଡିଆ ବ୍ୟକ୍ତି ନାହାନ୍ତି କି ଯେ କି ମୋତେ କିଛି ସାହାଯ୍ୟ କରି ପାରିବେ?

ଏହା ଜାଣି ମୁଁ ଭାରି ଖୁସି ଓ ଉତ୍‌ଫୁଲ୍ଲିତ ଯେ ଓଡିଆ ଭାଷା ବିଶ୍ଵବ୍ୟାପୀ ସ୍ଵୀକୃତପ୍ରାପ୍ତ ହେଉଛି.I am very happy and equally excited to learn that Oriya language is getting recognition in the global arena..certainly great news for some poor die-hard Oriyans! Oriyans have never been as proud of their mother tongue and mother land as other groups such as Bengalis or Tamilians. But yes, they have that emotions in them and it's just matter of time.. I am sure that emotion will come out some day when they realize that they are nothing without their own origin. I love my mother land exactly as much as I love my mother, and deep inside of them, I know every single Oriya feels the same, but is lacking in that little bit of come-forward-ness. I don't want to reveal all such..i am sure my fellow brothers can understand what i allude to ..

I am very glad to see Oriya on Wikipedia, but I'm as much sad seeing the formatting of pages. It is just horrible. There is no "fala" and all of them have been sustituted by "halanta". The "kara"s are in wrong places. Is it the fault of the site itself or my browser? Will anybody let me know?

ଉତ୍ତର: Dear Sir, I think you are using XP OS. For ur kind information Oriya language is not supported by any other OS rather than Windows Vista. You will find all Matra, kaara, Fala in wrong place. But it is fine in Vista OS. Try Once!!!!!!

The main page is extremely broken, many vowels are wrong. The articles use letters that don't exist. Yes, the current Oriya Wikipedia is of bad quality, unfortunately nobody is there to fix it. :( -- 84.178.238.121 ୧୯:୨୯, ୨୭ September

If anybody is there who can tell me how to get these pages in order then i'll be more than glad to do it. Sadly I've XP and not Vista and the free oriya fonts about which there is a link on this wiki website is not ok. It downloads english fonts rather than oriya ones. If they had akruti 99 that would have been much better. I think its copyright period is over. Can anybody check it and tell me?

While I cannot recommend the fonts that are linked here, they work. You're probably expecting them to be symbol fonts, but these are Unicode fonts, which show up as English in Windows Font Viewer. Then it is too bad 'coz it does not work. This unicode font can't place the right things in right place :(Being hopeless I tried out several free softwares, but sadly when pasting 'em here the page does not display 'em as I had typed. I had translated one page from English wiki. :[And till the problem aint fixed i aint gonna do nothing 4 this wikipedia then. Very sad. Nobody is here 2 fix it??? O' god help this site !!!!!!

There is a very small project called Oriya Wiktionary. There is a vote to close the project or keep it open. If you want to close down Oriya Wiktionary, you can vote "support deletion". If you want to keep Oriya Wiktionary open, you can vote "oppose deletion". Also, if you write pages in the Oriya language in the project, you can help keep it open. Please tell people about this in Oriya.

Further promotion of Indic language wikipedias needs mass media publicity like Print, Radio,telvision , aproaching in academic Institutions.
Also if possible a level of field support from network engineers in India for presentation and training in usage of Indian Languages and wikipedia can be a added boon.
May I call on all indic language wikipedia users,to put our hands together to design special barnstars or suggest one which can be awarded to all those who will support our noble cause with actual field support among Indian education institutions and Indian mass media or actual field 'network'help to users.
I belive we should award barnstars to such users who can support the cause through online publicity like blogs , groups etc. also.

[edit] Betawiki: better support for your language in MediaWiki

Dear community. I am writing to you to promote a special wiki called Betawiki. This wiki facilitates the localisation (l10n) of the MediaWiki interface. You may have changed many messages here to use your language in the interface, but if you would log in to for example the Japanese language Wiktionary, you would not be able to use the interface as well translated as here. In fact, of 1,736 messages in the core of MediaWiki, 0.00% of the messages have been translated. Betawiki also supports the translation of messages for 126 extensions, with 2,174 messages. Many of them are used in WMF projects and they are vital for understanding the wiki. Currently 0.00% of the WMF extension messages have been translated. Translators for over 90 languages contribute their work to MediaWiki this way every month.

If you wish to contribute to better support of your language in MediaWiki, as well as for many MediaWiki extensions, please visit Betawiki, create an account and request translator privileges. You can see the current status of localisation of your language on MediaWiki.org and do not forget to get in touch with others that may already be working on your language on Betawiki.

If you have any further questions, please let me know on my talk page on Betawiki. We will try and assist you as much as possible, for example by importing all messages from a local wiki for you to start with, if you so desire.

Hello. To facilitate steward granting of bot access, I suggest implementing the standard bot policy on this wiki. In particular, this policy allows stewards to automatically flag known interlanguage linking bots (if this page says that is acceptable), which form the vast majority of such requests. The policy also enables global bots on this wiki (if this page says that is acceptable), which are trusted bots that will be given bot access on every wiki that allows global bots.

This policy makes bot access requesting much easier for local users, operators, and stewards. To implement it we only need to create a redirect to this page from Project:Bot policy, and add a line at the top noting that it is used here. Please read the text at m:Bot policy before commenting. [edit] The LocalisationUpdate extension has gone live

The LocalisationUpdate extension is now enabled for all Wikimedia projects. From now on new localisations that become available in SVN will become available to your project within 24 hours. Your localisations get into SVN from translatewiki.net typically within a day and at worst in two days. This is a huge improvement from the old practice where the localisations became available with new software. This could take weeks, even months.

The localisations done by our community at translatewiki.net are committed to SVN typically every day. When the system messages in English are the same as the local messages, they will now be inserted in a file and are available for use in all our projects in a timely manner

Local messages have an impact on the performance of our system. It is best when messages are as much as possible part of the system messages. In order to remove unnecessary duplication, all the messages that have a local localisation and are exactly the same as the system message will be removed. What we ask you to do is to compare and proof read the messages in translatewiki.net and the local messages. You can then either remove local messages when the translatewiki.net message is to be preferred or, you can update the message at translatewiki.net.

Messages that are specific to your project will have to stay as they are. You do want to check if the format and the variables of the message are still the same.

When you localise at translatewiki.net, your messages will be used in all Wikimedia projects and eventually in all MediaWiki based projects. This is how we provide the standard support for your language. When messages change, at translatewiki.net you will be prompted to revisit your translations. Localising is more efficient because we have innovated the process to make you more efficient; there is text explaining about messages and we have applied AJAX technology to reduce the number of clicks you have to make.

We expect that with the implementation of LocalisationUpdate the usability of MediaWiki for your language will improve. We are now ready to look at other aspects of usability for your language as well. There are two questions we would like you to answer: Are there issues with the new functionality of the Usability Initiative Does MediaWiki support your language properly

The best way to answer the first question is to visit the translatewiki.net. Change the language to your language, select the “vector” skin and add the advanced tool bar in in the preferences and check out the new functionality. And make some changes in your user page. When there is a need to improve on the localisation, please make the necessary changess . It should update your localisation straight away. We would like you to report each issue individually at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Usability_issues.

When there are problems with the support of MediaWiki for your language, we really want to know about this. It is best to report each issue separately. In this way there will be no large mass of issues to resolve but we can address each issue on its own. Consider issues with the display of characters, the presentation of your script, the position of the side bar, the combination of text with other languages, scripts. It is best to try this in an environment like the prototype wiki as it provides you with a clean, basic and up to date environment. The prototype wiki is available for five languages but you can select any of them, change the preferences to your language and test out MediaWiki for your language.

We would like you to report each issue individually at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Language_issues. The issues you raise will all be assessed. It is important to keep each issue separate, because this will make it easier to understand the issues and find solutions.
