ଏକ ଇଟାଲୀୟ ଭାଷା , ପ୍ରକୃତରେ ଏହା 'ଲାଟିଅମ' ଓ 'ପ୍ରାଚୀନ ରୋମ'ରେ କୁହାଯାଏ । ଏହା ଅନ୍ୟ ଇଉରୋପୀୟ ଭାଷା ଭଳି , ପ୍ରାଚୀନ 'ପ୍ରାକ-ଭାରତୀୟ-ଇଉରୋପୀୟ' ଭାଷାରୁ ଉଦ୍ଭବ । ଏହାର ଉତ୍ପତି ଇଟାଲୀୟ ପେନିସୁଲାଠାରେ ହୋଇଥିଲା । ଯଦିଓ ଏହା ଏକ ମୃତ ଭାଷା , ଆଜିବି ବହୁତ ଛାତ୍ର , ଭାଷାବିତ ଓ ଖ୍ରୀଷ୍ଟିୟାନ ପାଦ୍ରୀ ଏହାକୁ ସୁନ୍ଦର ଭାବେ କହିପାରନ୍ତି । ଏବେବି ବହୁତ ବିଦ୍ୟାଳୟ ଓ ଉଚ୍ଚ-ବିଦ୍ୟାଳୟରେ ଏହାକୁ ପଢାଯାଏ । ଲାଟିନ ଭାଷାକୁ ନୂଆ ଶବ୍ଦ ସୃଷ୍ଟି ପାଇଁ ବ୍ୟବହାର କରାଯାଏ । ଲାଟିନ ବ୍ୟତୀତ ଅନ୍ୟ ଇଟାଲୀୟ ପରିବାରର ଭାଷା ସବୁ ଊହ୍ୟ ହୋଇଗଲେଣି ।
